I will never forget the moment
when after trekking for hours, we arrived in the village and
the women came out with all their garlands
I was just in tears. I was so touched, because you could tell,
when they presented the garlands to us, that they were just
as thrilled as we were, to have us there as we were to be there
and to be receiving them. It was just an incredible gift that
very much touched the heart.
I was totally impressed by how courageous these village women
were to form together, as a "mother's group" and to
sustain the work that they were doing for their children and
families. I couldn't believe, given the opposition of their
husbands, how much courage it had taken.

During one of the interactions
with the women's group I was very, very touched to see
that these women were working together. The kind of
solidarity that I could feel among them, and also the
fact that they managed to come together and among themselves
they could find a leader was most impressive. This type
of solidarity is not always very easy.

I've traveled to places like
Egypt and Jamaica but this trip was really different. Usually
I've just gone as a tourist so I've never really met with the
people. I've stayed in nice hotels, played golf and laid on
the beach, but during this trip I was part of a community of
travelers. We not only learned from one another, but we also
interacted with the local people, learning, from them, about
their lives.

The Jagriti trek -
Every step a prayer
Every destination, the path
and life - but a trail.
Dark oblivion
Deep awakening
Walk on - a step at a time.

| After listening to these
resilient women speak about their lives, it became clear to
me that no matter how complex or simple the trappings of one's
life, the basic desires are the same -- health, security and
happiness.

The awakening trek of 1998 was interesting and educational,
and I made a lot of friends. Women from around the world traveled
together though our beautiful Himalyan region. We took an
easy tourist and a difficult non-tourist trek to reach Ghangdruk
and Chitwon. This trek was designed so that the participating
women could see Nepal and visit women's organizations
TEWA, WACN, The Mother's Group and ACAP.
The most important part of our tour
was sharing information about the problems facing women worldwide
and how people and NGOs are tackling these problems
The participating Western women on our
trek team were impressed with the hard work of the Nepali
women and the porters who were working to alleviate the problems
facing rural women in Nepal. Some of our friends tried to
carry loads on their back just for fun, but just for a minute.
It made them realize just how strong the Nepali women are.

.I wish
to thank you, the Nagarik Aawaz and Jagriti International for organizing an excellent workshop
in Nepal. I feel privileged to have been a part
of that workshop and am confident that I have emerged
better as a person and as a professional from that
event. We also wish to thank you for sparing your
valuable time for visiting the Thankot project.
As discussed during that visit, we are sending you
a proposal (concept) on the adult literacy program
for the women of the village. We look forward to
your response.

We would like to place on record our deepest sense of
appreciation and gratitude to you. We feel very much encouraged
and recognized in our effort to mobilize and empower the
rural women. Your visit to our organization is an important
event for all of us. The workshop at Hyderabad was very
enriching and enlightening. It was simply an experience
of learning and solidarity. We are eagerly looking forward
to such opportunities in the future.

"Since it was my first time attending
a workshop I really got good impression about the workshop.
The other women who attended were very experienced and
dedicated to their service to the needy. I learnt a lot
from the workshop and other senior women. In fact, the
workshop gave me more confidence to work with the refugee
women and to be their voice to the international community.
I hope one day I will be able to reach my goal.

Jagriti is an amazing
story now! Thank God for all these initiatives. I am in
awe. The workshop which I had the privilege to facilitate
went extremely well - - so many spin off of gains - it
is hard to assess them all. But, these Bridging Worlds
volunteers means more work for you all. Just to say congratulations
to all of Jagriti International who have made it possible.
Our world never needed this work more - in fact I think
it may be one of the only hopes left.

I am grateful to the
participants, Rita Didee and YOU, AND JAGRITI INTERNATIONAL
WHO PICK ME UP FROM THE GRASSROOT LEVEL. This is kind
of strengthening me to work for the people in the community
- - hopefully I will return back to Nepal with lots of
ideas and knowledge.

First of all, let me thanks a lot
for getting us participating in Jagriti Workship even
we're out of Kathmandu valley. The workshop was superb
to exchange ideas and know each other besides the information
about the women empowerment activities that is being done
by women themselves. It's great to see women trying to
change the present poor condition of women in Nepal.
Actually being far from valley it is difficult to know
about the recent development in women empowerment sector.
This workshop provided us with many new ideas the experience
that we could implement in our service area.
Women and their organization, together, really makes difference.
Thanks for doing such a great job. May you always hear
the unheard. With love and appreciation,
