Trokosi Abolition Fellowship International
Koforidua, Ghana
| Trokosi Abolition Fellowship International in the Eastern Region of Ghana, Africa was founded in 1999 by Stephen Awudi Gadri and a group of women intent on liberating the Trokosi slaves of the region. Since 1999 its mission has expanded from the “liberation, rehabilitation and modification of other harmful traditional practices” to also include the empowerment of women in health, education, agricultural practices, income generating activities, AIDS support and education. The fellowship’s women are also working on a book regarding the Trokosi slave situation, called “Harvest of Souls, Farewell Trokosi.” The Trokosi Abolition Fellowship seeks to build programs for counseling, skill training, education, micro-enterprise, healthcare, resettlement and integration in order to increase the empowerment of women, and to advance their efforts to liberate the Trokosi slaves. With eleven staff members, thirteen-thousand volunteers, and nine-hundred members, current projects include advocating HIV/AIDS prevention through peer education, voluntary counseling and diagnostic testing. In the future, it hopes to involve women in palm plantations, food processing, computer training and to provide library facilities, and affordable housing for the homeless. |
