Women Union of Kurdistan (WUK)
Sulaimany, Iraq
Women Union of Kurdistan (WUK) was established on November 4, 1989 by a group of eleven women whose goal was to educate and assist in the improvement of women's skills and rights. The mission of WUK is to "achieve women's equality with men in political, social, cultural, economic, and educational aspects." WUK seeks to assist the women of Iraq in hopes of creating opportunities for social change, strategies of mutual support, and facilitating access to educational resources on human rights. Currently, WUK is engaged in numerous activities, such as publishing educational magazines for women, managing the Aram Shelter Project (a shelter for abused women), holding seminars dedicated to educating women in health, education, and legal issues, as well as various projects aiming to improve social development for women.
