A TIME FOR RESTRUCTURING
August 2004

Dear Friends

Astrologers (like my mother) often speak of the power of the full moon to move large bodies of water thereby creating low and high tides. Due to security and funding concerns, Jagriti International has called upon the power of the full moon and decided to temporarily suspend our programs to focus on restructuring the organization.

Like the moon, since 2001 Jagriti International has also been exerting a powerful pull on women and women's organizations around the world. With more than 120 women's organizations from 16 countries registered and seeking support and technical assistance, we have witnessed the need for small grants, networking and leadership training. The 150+ inquiries we received this year alone from potential volunteers also demonstrates the willingness of women from around the world to support one another.

Yet, in trying to build bridges between women we cannot ignore the realities of today's world, ranging from security issues to economic constraints. Each bridge that we build requires a strong foundation. Jagriti's extensive website and on-line administrative database have positioned us to operate effectively from anyplace in the world with Internet connection. Bridging Worlds handbooks and country guides have been developed and tested by our program participants. This issue of Awakenings will bring you up-to-date on the bridges that we've built between our volunteers, emerging leaders and women's organizations. The article about our Bridging Worlds garden photographic exhibit will also show you some of our efforts to tell the stories of our emerging leaders and their work.

The groundwork has been done, but now Jagriti has reached a turning point, and with the rising demand for our services, it's imperative that we transition from a voluntary grassroots organization into a sustainable and efficient global benefit organization. This will require not only vision and volunteer commitment, but also a sound structure and financial backing to create and implement programs that will empower women around the world. As a group of women who are not easily deterred or intimidated by security threats or the lack of funding, we remain committed to serving and supporting women's groups around the world.

In January 2005 you will hear more about the future of Jagriti. We welcome your suggestions and donations during this transitional period. Contributions can be made on-line ( http://www.jagriti-international.org/PayJagriti.asp ) and e-mails to info@jagriti-international.org will be checked on a monthly basis.

Remember the power of the moon, like the power of women goes in cycles - - sometimes we see it shining bright in the sky and sometimes we see nothing, but it's always there waiting to emerge and awaken all of us.
