| LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
|
May 2004
|
Dear Friends
The front page of my newspaper continues to shock me.
Women refugees raped in Sudan, Iraqi prisoners of war,
bombings in Chechnya. Like all of you, it's hard for me
to get these graphic depictions of brutality and conflict
out of my head. So, rather than feeling totally

overwhelmed by the sadness of the world
I turn my thoughts to Indira, Sadiqa, Ayesha, Kabita, Scotlin
and Pushpa, our 2003 Emerging Leaders.
|
Their stories of courage and hope in
the face of despair, inspire and carry me through the day. As
they work to organize our 2004 Bridging Worlds Workshops I continue
to believe that the struggle of one woman is the struggle of
all. We hope that many of you will read and be inspired by our
2004
Awakening Journeys and travel with us and the 2003 Emerging
Leaders to demonstrate your support for women's groups in Asia.
We also welcome your donations to support the costs of these
workshops that will host nearly 100 women's organizations and
democratically elect 2005 Emerging Leaders from Pakistan, Afghanistan,
India and Nepal. Sign
up as a sponsor!
Our spring issue of Awakenings highlights Saathi,
one of the groups that we'll be visiting in Nepal. Be sure to
read Lin Rosney's
story about her work as a Bridging Worlds volunteer in Nepal
as well as details of Saathi's "Child Sponsorship" program that
Lin helped to publicize. The problem of dowry
deaths continue in India and Olakh, based in Gujarat State,
shares with our network the tragic story of a woman's alleged
suicide. In Afghanistan, despite many promises by the U.S. government,
the daily lives of women remain unchanged. Be sure to read the
speech given in Washington D.C. by Jagriti Advisor, Sima
Wali, a member of the 2002 Afghan peace negotiations.
Girl's Learn International
is a new Jagriti partner group that is also building bridges
between young American women by "adopting" sister schools around
the world. Jagriti emerging leaders from Afghanistan and Nepal
have facilitated these adoptions.
"Finding Your Way
Home," a new Jagriti Interaction Event is described by Cindy
Jones. Led by Marianne Archibald, in this workshop the story
of the Wizard of Oz becomes a vehicle for personal transformation
and allows each of us - male and female - to connect with our
true source of power.
As always we welcome your comments, participation and donations.
Remember you too can make a difference in a woman's life. We
look forward to hearing from you.
