Message From The President

Dear Jagriti Friends,

It's like a dream come true..six women, representing women's organizations from four neighboring countries (Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal) together in the U.S under the auspices of Jagriti International. Four have never visited the States, and one had never left her country, or been on an airplane. On September 8, 2003 they arrived as strangers, fearful of each other, their minds filled with cultural and historical animosities. Within less than a week, they were sisters, sharing food, clothes and stories of their lives as well as their hopes and fears. Bridging Worlds is possible.one person at a time.and thanks to your support we've begun to build bridges in a region torn by conflict and misunderstanding.

Small World with Mikki

Joining together in front of Disneyland's "It's a Small World" are (left to right), Indira Ghale (Nepal), Sadiqa Basiri (Afghanistan), Ayesha Mahmood (Pakistan), Maryma Scotlin (India), Pushpa Prakash (India), Kabita Upadhyay (Nepal), Dr. Michele (Mikki) Andina (USA/Switzerland)

We hope that you'll enjoy reading about the wonderful U.S. groups who are building international bridges by offering internships to the Emerging Leaders, as well as stories from some of the people whose lives have already been touched by our program. Also read about Olga Vasilopoulos, a Bridging Worlds volunteer from Australia. She worked in India with the Guild of Women Achievers and shares her "awakening" in the story about the "Sacrificial lamb who became a goat."

This issue of Awakenings marks the beginning of our "Featured Women's Organization." In this issue we focus on Blue Veins in Peshawar Pakistan. We welcome articles from any group who wishes to share more about their work with Jagriti's circle of readers.

Finally, be sure to visit our special page devoted to the 2003 Bridging Worlds Emerging Leaders. You can follow their activities, see photos, read their on-line journals and send them e-mails. In December all six Emerging Leaders will reunite in Washington D.C. and continue the important process of building bridges of peace and understanding. We welcome you to join us!

Sincerely,
Michele (Mikki) Andina
