Letter from the President

June 2003

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are now history and "rebuilding" has begun. From the Middle East, to the Congo to the United States everyone hopes that the security and political climate of the world will improve. "Building Bridges" to a safe and peaceful world requires LEADERSHIP. At Jagriti International we believe that to build a "new world" we must have women's empowerment and leadership... not just power centralized in a few female individuals, but rather the power of a collective force of awakened women and emerging leaders. In this issue of Awakenings, "A Letter of Peace from Nepal," demonstrates the power of women joining together and represents the unheard voices of women and women's organizations in Nepal.

In September 2003 eight Jagriti International Bridging Worlds Emerging Leaders will be arriving in California. Today we would like to introduce the final four Emerging Leaders from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Selected as representatives by their own organizations, each Emerging Leader seeks to enhance her skills in order to better serve the women of her country.

On Saturday September 13 in Santa Barbara, California, please join us and meet the 8 Emerging Leaders from Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan. For those who can't make it to California, other speaking engagements around the U.S. are being planned, so be sure to visit our website later this summer for a detailed schedule of Jagriti Interaction Events.

The article, "Spotlight on Manushi," continues our efforts to feature the work of Jagriti partner organizations. We welcome our partners to submit articles and photos about their work for future newsletters. Be sure to read about the awards and work of our Board Members and share in the pain and suffering from a woman in Ahmedabad, India.

We hope you enjoy the contents of Awakenings. We welcome your comments and support of our work. Jagriti International exists because of your generous contributions and participation. We thank you!

Sincerely,
Michele (Mikki) Andina
