Jagriti International in Pakistan and Afghanistan

Michele (Mikki) Andina visits women's groups

From September 25 to October 21, 2002, Dr. Michele Andina, President of Jagriti International, will be traveling in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Pakistan "Awakening Journey" originally scheduled for May 2002 was postponed due to post 9/11 events, but Dr. Andina states: "Now, more than ever, Pakistan and Afghan women's organizations need to know that women around the world want to support them." In Pakistan, Dr. Andina will visit our partner organizations, SACH in Islamabad, Shirkat Gah in Lahore and the Afghan Women's Welfare Department in Peshawar. In Afghanistan, she'll be traveling with Sima Wali of Refugee Women in Development, and conducting a needs assessment of NGOs in Kabul and Jalalabad.

In recent months, women in Pakistan have experienced a number of unthinkable brutalities, including this story about a woman who was gang raped by a tribal council. Pakistan women's organizations such as Shirkat Gah and SACH are actively working to stop these atrocities from occurring.
